Fractures
What are the warning signs?
There are a few key symptoms and signs which can be used to identify a fracture. These can vary depending on the place of the fracture and the severity of the injury, but they may include; large amounts of pain, swelling, visible bruising, deformity in the limbs, or an inability to use the limbs. If any of these signs seem prominent in the victim's situation, then medical help should be sought after. How to help the victim? A person with a fracture has a reasonably serious injury and it must be treated at some point by the emergency services. While waiting for this help there are some simple steps that can be put in place to make the victim more comfortable. It is important to keep the fracture still to avoid further damage, so it should be put up in a lose sling, bandage or splint support. It is important not to try and straighten the arm, because this will also make it worse. An ice pack should also be applied to try and reduce the swelling. It is also important to stop the victim from eating or drinking before emergency services arrive because the person may need surgery. |
