Diabetes
Diabetes, what is it?
Diabetes is a fairly common problem in our modern world which can occur from a person having too much glucose in their blood for an extended period of time. This high blood sugar can cause extensive damage to a persons heart, blood vessels, eyes and kidneys. This can then lead to heart attacks and strokes and possibly death. There are two main types of diabetes, type 2 which is more common and type 1 which is the more life-threatening type that requires insulin. How to treat it- A diabetic may have a hypoglycaemic attack, which occurs if a person has very low blood sugar levels and their brain is starved of glucose. The symptoms generally include feeling weak, hungry, looking pale, and beginning to sweat. The persons speech may also become slurred and they may become confused. If it is not treated quickly, the victim may also eventually go unconscious. There is a simple treatment for this. As the persons blood sugar levels are low, then they need to be given sugar to bring it back up. This can be anything from a couple of jelly beans, or pieces of chocolate, to a glucose tablet. A sugary drink is also a great way to get sugar back into the victims systems. If the person is beginning to fall unconscious, then it becomes a medical emergency and 00 must be called. If the blood sugar levels are too high a diabetic can become unconscious. If this happens phone 000 and proceed with CPR. They will need insulin and medical care |
